Organic Rainbow Carrot from Oak Valley Organics

Taste the rainbow!! Did you know that orange is only one of MANY varieties of carrot that existed long before we became so familiar with this root vegetable? They were originally grown as medicine, and have a ton of nutritional value -- the variety of colour certainly adds to that reputation with the incorporation of anthocyanins (purple and red carrots), lutein (yellow carrots) and lycopene (red carrots)!

Spray-free Grape Tomatoes from Twin River Farm

Small and sweet, but typically a bit more acidic than Cherry tomatoes, these are perfect for snacking. They'll also blister beautifully in a pan, or lend some balanced substance to a salad or sandwich!

Organic Summer Savory from Blue Lagoon Organics

A characteristic ingredient in herbes de Provence, summer savory has popular followings and uses all over the world. In Atlantic Canada, it takes the place of sage in many dishes. It has a rich earthiness, reminsicent of rosemary but with more sweetness and fresh zest. Will work well into any poultry, pork or duck seasoning. And, if you STILL haven't tried Cryssi's Jumping Potatoes, the original blog recipe with summer savoury can be found here!

Organic Sage from Blue Lagoon Organics

This earthy, peppery herb is a member of the mint family and adds a crisp comfort to dishes. It has something of a pine-like aroma when raw, and you're more than likely familiar with the flavour, even if you've never used it on its own!

Spray-free Golden Beet Bunch from Wild Earth Farms

Sweet and nutritious! Traditionally, beets are known for roasting and borscht, but they've also been known to sneak their way into a desert or two, lending rich sweetness, minerals and moisture retention! They're packed with minerals and dietary nitrates, which improve oxygen flow through the bloodstream and regulate blood pressure! Golden beets are slightly sweeter and less earthy than their red counterparts!

Spray-free Acorn Squash from Wild Earth Farms

This sweet, nutty "winter" squash actually belongs to the same species as all summer squash. It is actually quite sweet, but could use some help bringing that flavour to the forefront by reducing its water content, which is higher than that of most actual winter squash varieties! The most popular way to cook these is roasting with butter and brown sugar -- add cinnamon or a savory herb like rosemary to switch things up!

Spray-free Green Kale from Jonathan Farms

Rich, earthy and full of minerals. Kale is familiar to most! Check out our featured recipe at the bottom of the page where we blend kale with garlic scapes to make a tasty twist on pesto!

Spray-free Leeks from Slow River Gardens

These awesome alliums are milder than most of their cousins, with a drawn out sweetness that adds depth to many dishes! The white bases can be used in place of most onions, while the green bundle of leaf sheaths can be used as an aromatic to flavour stocks, soups, rice and noodle dishes, or even cooked crisp and eaten themselves (though they're a bit tougher if not cooked thoroughly!)

Spray-free Parsley from Slow River Gardens

Fresh and lightly peppery, parsley plays nicely in cocktails, atop buttery potatoes and torn or chopped over just about any fat-rich meat! Treating the parsley much like a bunch of flowers will keep it fresh longer.

Extra sweet and crisp! Similar to a royal gala. Can store well, but who's waiting to chomp these down?

Spray-free Early Golden Pears from Riverbend Orchards

Sweet pears with a firmer flesh and crisp-eating texture. This combination makes them excellent for cooking or preserving, as well!
