SUMMER FOOD BOX--WEEK 13--
The fall jackets are out, the wind feels cooler and the leaves are starting to change. But that doesn't mean Summer Produce has stopped.
Here's what to expect in this week's Food Box:

Organic Tomato Party Pack from Blue Lagoon Organics
A Colourful party of tomatoes, Varying sizes and shapes these tomatoes are sure to add some fun to a Caprese salad, or veggie platter. With approximately 5-6 different varieties of Tomatoes.

Try this week's featured recipe: Parmesan Kale Crisps
Enjoy with a fall soup or as a healthy snack with friends
Kale is a hearty green of the Brassica family that still thrives this time of year.
Unlike other vegetables that are grown in Manitoba, Kale can grow all year here. If you're a beginner gardener it is a great place to start (just watch out for aphids)
Organic Summer Savoury bunch from Blue Lagoon Organics
Summer Savoury has great flavour that can enrich any meal, it pairs well with chicken, fish, pork. Summer Savoury compared to its counterpart Winter Savoury has a peppery and fresh taste. While Winter is more earthy and subdued.
Spray Free Basil from Twin River Gardens
Basil grows right until the first frost! It is very sensitive to cold so it's a great time to make pestos or to dry out the leaves to use over the winter. Basil is actually used to make medicine in many traditions. Great for stomach issues and can also be used to treat bug bites.
Spray-Free Rainbow Carrots from Wild Earth Farms
More than just a feast for the eyes, although after they are cooked they all taste pretty much the same. But Orange carrots are known to be good for your eye health, Purple Carrots are actually good for your heart health and are full of anti-oxidants.
Spray-Free Kohlrabi from Wild Earth Farms
Slice or Julienne Cut and add to Stir-fry. The whole stem can be hollowed out and stuffed with a veggie and rice or meat filling and baked like stuffed peppers.
Stuffed Kohlrabi with tomatoes and Feta
Spray-Free Hakurei Turnips from Jonathan Farms
A mild Japanese Turnip that can be roasted or eaten raw. Make sure to save the Greens and sauté them. They have a similar taste to Collards and are full of vitamins like Kale.
Spray-Free Bok Choy from Jonathan Farms
Bok Choy is a variation of Chinese Cabbage with a flavour reminiscent of spinach and water chestnuts but is slightly sweeter. The plant itself is similar to a mustard Green with the white bulbous stem. Tip: when making stir fry start with a cold pan for your aromatics like Garlic and Ginger, the longer they cook in the cold oil (without burning) gets the most flavour.

There are hundreds of varieties of onions in the world and green onions can be derived from all varieties of onions, it is just the matter of timing when they are harvested.
Spray-Free Green Zucchini from Jonathan Farms
Zucchini or courgette in other cultures is a summer squash that has a high fibre content and a low calorie count. Also packed with Potassium. Zucchini/Squash thrive in Manitoba with harvests starting as early as May and going as late as November.
