Here's what to expect in your box this week:
Organic Rainbow Carrots from Oak Valley Organics
Not just a way to liven up your dinner plate, Rainbow carrots have no real difference taste-wise, but while orange carrots are good for your eye sight, Purple carrots are good for inflammation and can lower blood pressure.
Organic Kennebec Potatoes from Oak Valley Organics
In case you haven't noticed, potatoes are extremely plentiful here in Manitoba. They do well in our soil and unpredictable climate. Kennebec's are a white flesh potato that is great however you wish to experiment with your potato dishes. Kennebecs are actually named after a native North American tribe that resided in what became Acadia or New France.
Spray-Free Rosemary from Twin River Gardens
Rosemary is a wonderful herb that pairs well with any meat. The plant itself can do wonders for your health. Try steeping some sprigs to make a tea that is great for gut health. Rosemary Essential oil is also great for stress relief.
Spray-Free Mint from Twin River Gardens
Add Mint to pesto for a bit of zest. Also fresh salads can always be improved with some mint. Throw a few leaves in your water for an additional health boost. Or make Mojitos!
Spray-Free Sorrel bunches from Twin River Gardens:
Used interchangeably as either a herb or a salad green, Sorrel has a citrusy, zesty flavour to it. Sorrel should be wrapped in a damp paper towel and stored in a plastic bag or container with water in the refrigerator.
Spray-Free Acorn Squash from Jonathan Farms:
Acorn squash is full of creamy, fluffy flesh that is great for any pumpkin recipe. Acorn is very good as a sweet dish, add some honey or brown sugar and cinnamon. Or you can stuff the whole squash with sausage stuffing with dried cranberries.
Spray-Free Arugula from Jonathan Farms
Arugula is a peppery salad green. Arugula adds life to pestos, and combined with the Sorrel in this week's box, an earthy green salad sounds like a great idea. You can also try this week's featured recipe: Pepper Jelly Grilled Cheese
Spray-Free Pie Pumpkin from John Abrams
Although the name is pie pumpkin that doesn't mean that's what you have to do with it. Pumpkin is great for digestion in humans as well as animals. Safe for Cats and Dogs, make frozen pumpkin treats and add them to their food bowls for some extra nutrition!
Spray-Free Yellow Onions from Wild Earth Farms
Yellow onions are a perfect staple to keep in your kitchen all year round. Local onions are hearty and last even through our harsh winters. They are higher in sulphur content than the white onion, which gives it a stronger, more complex flavour.
Just a heads up, Arugula has been shorted by the farmer, so some boxes will contain Spring Mix instead of Arugula. The featured recipe works well with both! Sorry for the inconvenience!
We'll see you back for the final week!
